A mini version of Yellowstone Park or Japan's very own Beppu's Hells, Unzen Hells had a much closer view of the bubbling (?) and smoky "hells" than the others, giving it a more otherworldly feel.
I do feel that Osorezan with its history and religious significance resonated more with me, but if that history and context was added with Unzen, Unzen will be the scarier (?) of the two.

Where they cook the eggs. |
Very foggy onsen. |
Had the entire onsen to myself. Apparently the entire "muddy" feel of the water is a unique feature??? |
My accommodations! Solo room for about JPY5,000. Yes, this is a pretty expensive place. |
