(斜里岳) Mt. Shari Hike

Mt. Shari is the crown of... well, Shari. The name Shari in Ainu means marshes where reeds are growing. It is also known by the names Okhotsk Fuji (オホーツク富士, ohōtsuku fuji) or Shari Fuji (斜里富士, shari fuji). wiki

It also is half a hike up/across a stream/river/waterfall, but nothing too sketchy.

Budget: JPY9,720 (~USD94) from Kushiro
  • JPY5,720. Train, Kushiro Station < > Kiyosachou Station (JPY2,860 one way)
  • JPY4,000. Taxi, Kiyosachou Station < > Seigakusou trailhead (JPY4,000 one way, assumed to be shared between two people)
    • I have done this with other Northeast Hokkaido hikes, so please refer to this post for the actual costs.
Hike Date / Difficulty (Elevation: 1,547m / 5,075ft)
  • July 9, 2022
  • Difficulty: 4 out of 5.
    • I personally would put this as a 3, but the river crossings do put a twist to this hike that bumps it up.
  • Route below is around 9.6 kilometers, with an elevation change of ▲1,165m/ ▽1,163m (6h40m)

    • Paid. Seigakusou (清岳荘).  At the trailhead. It is JPY2,120 per head, +300 for futon rental, +drinking water as they don't provide it. If you plan to stay in your car and sleep on it, it's JPY520 per car.

Itinerary
  • Just hike. Haha. Given the logistics from Tokyo, I think the best option is to fly to Kushiro, rent a car, drive early in the morning and start the hike at 5 or 6am.
Actual Log
I did this with a couple more Hokkaido hikes, so I will focus on just the hike itself.
  • 05:00. Arrive at trailhead.
